How To Clean Your Computer Monitor
The proper way to clean your computer monitor depends on which type you have, LCD or CRT. But there are some similarities. First, never just spray glass cleaner on the screen. Liquid can get into areas where it can do damage. Furthermore, most glass cleaners contain ammonia, and you should never use ammonia on an LCD screen. Also, always use soft, lint free cloths, one to wipe with and another to dry it.
You should power down your monitor or laptop when cleaning it. It is safer to completely unplug it, but not many people will actually do so. Just be sure that you do not let any liquid run or drip into any cases or vent holes. Avoid speakers also.
If you do not know what type of monitor you have, here is how to tell the difference. CRT styles are bulky and have a glass front. If you have a laptop, you do not have a CRT. LCD and plasma styles appear to be a gel substance, and must be handled carefully. Do not press against these screens, and try to not even touch them.
Dust first with an anti-static, dry cloth. You can then either wipe with one of the disposable cleaning cloths made for cleaning computer equipment or with a liquid cleaner you apply to your cloth first. Plasma styles require one of the cleansers formulated specifically for them. For cleaning LCD types you can use rubbing alcohol or cider vinegar. Normal window cleansers used in the home can also be used for CRT types if first placed on a cloth. With all styles, you should dry the screen immediately to avoid streaks and spots.
Never try to clean the inside of the case. Clean the exterior just as you cleaned the screen. Dust first, and then wipe with a cleanser placed on a soft cloth.
How often you will need to clean your computer screen depends on your environment and usage patterns. Naturally, you want to do so when it is obviously dirty. But another sign might be that your display seems to be getting duller and harder to read. Regardless of whether you notice any difference in quality or not, clean it at least once every three to six months.
Always follow any directions shown in the manual you received when you purchased your computer over any general tips you might find. While your unit is covered by a warranty, you should follow instructions to the letter. Failure to apply cleaning instructions as directed can be cause to invalidate your warranty, so it is best to not take any chances.
